The foundation for Rimowa’s success was laid in 1898. The Cologne-based company initially produced leather harnesses before moving on to wooden suitcases covered in leather. The saddle maker soon became a small suitcase factory, officially named Koffer- und Lederwaren-Fabrik Paul Morszeck GmbH in 1908. Two decades later, the founder’s son took over the company and, in 1931, renamed it RIMOWA – an acronym for RIchard MOrszeck WArenzeichen. A pivotal change came in 1937 when the company switched from leather and wood to aluminium. The legendary grooved pattern was introduced in 1950 – now the signature look of the Cologne-based brand. Rimowa’s logo includes the letters M and O (for Morszeck) and echoes the silhouette of Cologne Cathedral, symbolising the brand’s deep connection to its hometown.
